The Inspiration Behind the Art
The deer skull represents the cycle of life, while the ferns provide a vibrant contrast that enlivens the artwork. This dynamic prompts viewers to contemplate nature’s beauty and its sometimes harsh realities.
Hiking in nearby forests, observing the relationship between fallen wildlife and the lush greenery that thrives around them. This real-world observation resulted in a painting that embodies both loss and regeneration, reminding us to cherish every aspect of the natural landscape. This piece symbolizes the intricate balance between life and death.
Techniques Used in the Painting
Each painting begins with a detailed pencil drawing. This is were the overall composition is constructed and serves as the planning stage for the final painting.
Creating this watercolor involved a careful blend of techniques to achieve both realism and more loose aspects of the medium. Using a soft wash technique for the background to enable colors to blend naturally, with detailed work for the deer skull, emphasizing contours and textures. The ferns were approached with a layering technique, incorporating multiple translucent washes to articulate depth and shadow.
